Target shooting in Jersey has a history of widespread participation, as well as success at a national and international level, stretching back for well over 100 years. It is probably the closest thing there is to being “Jersey’s national sport”.
- It is an extremely safe sport, almost certainly the safest of all activity sports.
- It can be pursued by both men and women on an equal basis: a woman won a Clay Target Gold Medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with a perfect score, and a girl of seventeen won the Gold Medal in Double Trap Clay at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
- It is an almost ‘ageless’ sport: it can be enjoyed at club level or pursued to the highest international standards by both young and old. In the Free Pistol event at the Barcelona Olympics, the Gold and Silver medallists were separated by 40 years, a gap that is inconceivable in any other sport; it is also interesting to note that the Silver medallist had won his first Olympic medal before the Gold medallist was born.
