NRA Service Pistol A Rules and Course of Fire

The following are the rules, regulations, and course of fire governing NRA Service Pistol A Competitions held by the Jersey Pistol Club.

Pistols:
  • A 9mm Browning self-loading pistol, as issued to the British and Commonwealth services, or an approved 9mm Browning with fixed sights privately owned.
Sights:
  • Non-adjustable, fixed metal sights.
  • May be black or white, but not coloured.
  • Orthoptics are not allowed.
Grips:
  • Plastic or wood, as issued.
  • No whipping or binding is allowed.
Safety:
  • The standard safety-catch and magazine safety must both operate.
Trigger:
  • Minimum pull 5 lbs., as per NRA rule 174.
Positions:
  • Standing, unsupported
  • Kneeling
  • Sitting (both buttocks on the ground)
  • One or two hands may be used throughout the competition
Ammunition:
  • Forty (40) rounds to be supplied by the competitor.
  • Factory or hand loaded
  • Magazines to be loaded with ten (10) rounds only for each practice.
Targets:
  • Fig 11/92.
  • Two (2) per competitor
Shooting Distances:
  • 10 metres
  • 15 metres
  • 20 metres
  • 25 metres
Rules:
  • This competition will be run in accordance with NRA Service Pistol Rules.
  • Conditions may be varied for reasons of safety, or if required by range operating conditions.
Course of Fire:
  • Practice 1
  • 25 metres.
    • Ten (10) shots at two (2) targets.
    • The targets will make two (2) appearances of fifteen (15) seconds, with an interval of ten (10) seconds.
    • Shooters will adopt a kneeling position, and make ready with safety catches applied.
    • On appearance of the targets, shooters will fire five (5) shots at Target #1, apply safety catches, and adopt a sitting position.
    • On the reappearance of the targets, shooters will fire five (5) shots at Target #2.
  • Practice 2
    • 20 metres.
    • Ten (10) shots at one (1) target.
    • Shooters to stand at 25m with loaded pistol holstered, arms hanging loosely at their sides.
    • The target will make one (1) appearances of one (1) second.
    • On appearance of the target, shooters to advance to 20m, draw pistol, and make ready.
    • Five (5) seconds later, the target will make the first of five (5) appearances of three (3) seconds, at irregular intervals of three (3) to ten (10) seconds.
    • Two shots to be fired at each appearance of Target #1.
    • Shooters to return to the alert position between appearances.
  • Practice 3
    • 15 metres.
    • Ten (10) shots at two (2) targets.
    • Shooters to stand at 20m with loaded pistol holstered, arms hanging loosely at their sides.
    • On appearance of the target, shooters to advance to 15m, draw pistol, make ready, and fire.
    • The targets will make one (1) appearance of eight (8) seconds, followed by four (4) appearances of three (3) seconds, at irregular intervals of three (3) to ten (10) seconds.
    • Two shots to be fired at each appearance of the targets, one on each target.
    • Shooters to return to the alert position between appearances.
  • Practice 4
    • 10 metres.
    • Ten (10) shots at two (2) targets.
    • Shooters to stand at 15m with loaded pistol holstered, arms hanging loosely at their sides.
    • On appearance of the target, shooters to advance to 10m, draw pistol, make ready, and fire.
    • The targets will make one (1) appearance of eight (8) seconds, followed by two (2) appearances of three (3) seconds, at irregular intervals of seven (7) to ten (10) seconds.
    • Any number of shots may be fired at each appearance, but not more than five (5) shots will count on each target.
    • Shooters to return to the alert position between appearances.
Notes:
  • Only holsters which securely retain the pistol with fastening strap or flap may be used.
  • Each member of a team will complete his whole shoot at one time.
